Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about acupuncture therapy before your first session.
Pro+ Physio — Acupuncture Therapy Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques delivered by qualified physiotherapists for musculoskeletal pain relief.
Acupuncture is a traditional treatment that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. It stimulates the nervous system, improves blood flow, reduces inflammation, and triggers the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins.
Most people feel little to no pain. You may experience a brief tingling, warmth, or dull ache when the needle is inserted — known as “de qi” — which is a positive sign that the treatment is working. The needles are extremely thin (much finer than injection needles).
Most patients with musculoskeletal pain notice improvement within 4–6 sessions. Acute conditions may respond faster, while chronic issues often benefit from a longer course. Your physiotherapist will create a personalised treatment plan after your initial assessment.
A standard acupuncture session lasts 30–45 minutes. Your first appointment (initial assessment) is usually 45–60 minutes, which includes a detailed consultation and physical assessment before treatment begins.
Many patients feel some relief after the first or second session. However, cumulative benefits build over multiple treatments as inflammation decreases and the body’s natural healing processes are activated. Improvements often continue for days or weeks after each session.
There is usually no downtime. You can resume normal activities immediately. Some people feel very relaxed or slightly tired after treatment — this is normal and a sign that your body is responding well.
Yes. When performed by qualified practitioners using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is very safe. Side effects are rare and usually minor (e.g., temporary bruising or mild soreness at needle sites).
Acupuncture is generally not recommended if you have a bleeding disorder, are taking strong blood thinners, have a pacemaker (for certain electrical stimulation techniques), or are in the first trimester of pregnancy. Your physiotherapist will screen you thoroughly.
Acupuncture is highly effective for many musculoskeletal conditions including lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee osteoarthritis, tennis/golfer’s elbow, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, headaches, hip pain, and sports injuries.
No referral is required. You can book directly. During your first visit, our physiotherapist will carry out a full assessment to ensure acupuncture is appropriate and safe for your condition.
Unlike painkillers or steroid injections that mainly mask symptoms, acupuncture addresses the root cause by reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and promoting the body’s natural healing. It works well alongside physiotherapy exercises.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Eat a light meal beforehand (avoid heavy meals or being overly hungry). Avoid alcohol and caffeine before your session. Bring any relevant medical history or scan results if you have them.
